Guys, We're Never Gonna See Hugh Jackman in the Classic Wolverine Costume

At the end of the extended cut of 2013's The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman's titular brawler is gifted a box containing the classic X-Men comics Wolverine costume. It made no sense, but it was the one and only way to get the god damned costume in the movie without having to have him wear it. Sure, it was a compromise cameo, but get used to it being the definitive appearance of that costume on film, since it's never gonna happen.

James Mangold—the director behind Cop Land, The Wolverine, Knight and Day, and the upcoming Logan—recently put any lingering hopes of ever seeing the character in the costume to bed in an interview with Screen Rant. When asked point blank about whether they had thought to throw fans a bone and at least let Jackman suit up one time. His response is brutally honest...

James Mangold: I always feel a certain contingent of fans who are yearning for it. But the biggest block I’ve had – I’m willing to take the heat for it – is that, I can never get past, being a writer for these movies as well, that Logan is the least narcissistic of all the superheroes, any kind I can think of – Marvel, DC or anywhere else. What I mean by that is, who puts a special branded outfit on when they do good deeds? And why? The only reason you do it is so you can have some sort of trademarked claim and get credit for what you did. Nothing seems less Wolverine-like than the desire to put on a trademarked outfit, particularly canary yellow, and kind of prance about doing good deeds and have people go, “Oh my God! It’s The Wolverine!” At least the Wolverine, as I see him, that’s a real struggle for me and always has been. I somehow feel that if somehow we ever put Hugh [Jackman] into one of those outfits, people would not be happy. Essentially, it’s something that lives on the page and I’m not sure could live anywhere else.

Listen to your friend James Mangold. He's a cool dude. I sincerely hope this puts the matter to bed. Let some other actor in some other version of this franchise somewhere down the line put the suit on. And when they do, you can be first in line to say "I toldja so!"
